on the land rented up to date by the Admiralty ds & coaling depot will apparently, if approved, entail the erection of yet another oil fuel installation on the Kowloon Peninsula in the vicinity of that being erected by the Admiralty themselves. I would call attention therefore to the remarks of the Oversea Defence Com- mittee as explained in my minute dated 4th. October, 1920, to Sir G. Fiddes (0.0737499), regarding the desirability of finding any additional sites required on some ground other than that in question. Although the Anglo-Persian Company do not appear to want the site to the immediate east of the coaling depot and Naval Yard, from 0.080509 it would appear that the Anglo-Saxon Petroleum Company wish to get it for an installation. Assuming therefore that the Companies have no connection, this application of the Asiatic Petroleum Company Ltd, means another installation. If this 18 so I presume it will be referred to the Oversea Defence Committee before being approved

We have been informed by the Director of Navy Contracts
that the Admiralty have recently terminated the tenancy of the land
at Kowloon, Hongkong hitherto rented from the Colonial Government
for use as a coaling depot and we have been asked whether this site
would be of interest to us for the erection of a fuel 011 Installation.
We have replied to this that the land in question would
certainly be of interest to us for the above purpose and we now write
at their request
to you direct/in order to confirm this and with a view to ascertaining
whether you will be prepared to grant us a lease for the site and if
so what would be the terms on which the land could be leased.
Te understand that the land has an area of about 4 mores
and that it is separated from the shore by a street named the Canton
Road and further by the General Coaling Depot and the Naval Coaling Depot, which have a width (including the Canton Road) of about 400 feet.
From our point of view the fact that the land is away from
the actual shore does not constitute a drawback as long as we are allowed to lay pipelines comecting our tanks with the shore.
In order to serve the interests of the port to its fullest
extent.
such pipelines should connect the fuel tanks with every loading and discharging jetty so that no ship should be compelled
